As I have mentioned previously, I am an avid fan of Carrie Hope Fletcher considering that we both share a love for books and of course…tea. She recently posted a video of books that she loved to read and ‘Big Magic’ was one of them.
I added it to my ‘to read’ list on Goodreads and finally decided to purchase it for my holiday to New York and boy did I not realise how much of an amazing influence this book would have on my day to day life. I have mentioned in previous posts that I am an extremely creative person, I’ve always enjoyed writing, performing, at one point drawing – and I’ve always struggled to fit in because of my creative interests. At school I’d be laughed at if I expressed my love for performing and sometimes frowned upon for not opting for a ‘sensible’ career path.
In an instant, Gilbert abolishes all of these bad energies and ultimately pushes me to do nothing but embrace my creative nature even more. I don’t want to give too much of the book away, because if like me, you are a creative person, you have to read it, but, Gilbert makes a point of allowing yourself to embrace your creative interests without it becoming your career, perhaps just a hobby – and thats important. For me, I’ve always focused on forever having a job that I enjoy and I struck very lucky with my current job, but I’ve always feared for the future and having a ‘normal’ job. But this is exactly Gilbert’s point, if you can have your passion as your career, great that’s awesome for you! But if not, thats absolutely fine too, make sure you can stand on your own two feet but also devote time to your creative talent as a hobby that might progress into something bigger.
Recently I’ve been fighting with myself about following dreams and embracing my talents, but I’m very glad to say that this book pushed me to face a dream I’ve been wanting for years. I haven’t succeeded just yet but it allowed me to take the first step to sail swiftly towards my dream with open arms. I can assure you that along my journey I will be coming back to this book purely to read certain chapters to keep the dream going.
“DO YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO BRING FORTH THE TREASURES THAT ARE HIDDEN WITHIN YOU?”
I urge you to read this book if you’re looking for inspiration or are even on the verge of giving up your dreams – it really is life changing.
